We are the hotel workers at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. Our career is serving the clients of this hotel and we take great pride in doing our jobs well. We feel it is our responsibility to inform you that conditions at the hotel are currently bad for clients and bad for workers.
We make poverty wages. Many of us have worked here over 15 years, but still must work second and third jobs to feed our families. Most of us can’t afford health insurance or a decent apartment. In addition, our workload has increased so much, that we injure ourselves regularly trying to keep up the same high level of service as always.
At other Hilton hotels, employees get better wages, have a reasonable workload and can access health insurance. We want a fair process to address these issues for the sake of our family’s future and for the sake of business at the hotel. When employees are overworked and underpaid, with no health insurance or security, it is difficult to provide the level of service that our guests expect.
We have tried for months to speak with the owner of the hotel about our problems. We proposed that we work together to create a better hotel industry on Century Blvd.
Instead of working with us to find solutions, we charge that the hotel has lashed out against those who speak up. More than 40 Unfair Labor Practice charges alleging threats, surveillance and discrimination have been filed against Hilton LAX. This environment makes it even harder to provide quality service.
We feel we have no choice but to ask clients of the Hilton LAX to stand with us and refuse to do business with the hotel until the owner decides to sit down with the workers and figure out a process for employees to decide how to have a voice at work. We take this step because we believe that it will lead to a better future for the employees, for the hotel and for the clients we serve. |
